Experiment : The Intersection of Technology and Art: A New Perspective on Landscape Imagery

As a master student, my current project focuses on the innovative amalgamation of various technologies to devise original methods of landscape representation. The primary objective is to deliver fresh, thought-provoking perspectives that surpass traditional photographic depictions. By harnessing advanced imaging techniques, I aim to reinterpret familiarly photographed locations within an inventive conceptual framework, transforming them into still images, moving images, or even animations. This transformative approach seeks to challenge and redefine conventional notions of photography and animation, offering an unparalleled viewing experience.

A prime illustration of this approach is my rendition of the 'Lone Tree'. This piece incorporates the symbolism of three interlocking rings, echoing the Borromean Rings concept representing 'Strength in Unity'. This symbol serves as an allegory for the intricate relationship between mind and body, as well as the links between human thoughts, emotions, and behaviour. These connections form the philosophical backbone of my photographic practice.

Synthesis and Learnings

Incorporating cutting-edge technology, such as still imaging and time-lapse, adds a dynamic dimension to my artwork. Despite these technologies not being novel, their integration facilitates a unique and engaging visual experience that aligns with my artistic vision.

This approach enables the animation of the artwork, presenting it to viewers in an innovative and captivating manner. The result is a fresh perspective on the landscape, fostering a newfound appreciation that traditional photographic methods could not provide.

However, while the animation achieved was in line with my initial intentions, it did not reach the level of refinement I aspire to. The concept, while engaging, requires further refinement. Several questions have arisen from this endeavour. Should I shoot independent video footage to create an animated image, including a time-lapse that I could animate? Or should I explore digital tools like after effects to create an animated image from stills? These are concepts that warrant further exploration and investigation.

Through this research project, I have gained a deeper understanding of the transformative potential of integrating diverse technologies in landscape imagery. The process has highlighted the power of innovation in reshaping viewer engagement and perception, enriching the broader visual arts landscape. This experiment serves as a testament to the importance of technological integration in pushing the boundaries of artistic expression, providing invaluable insights for future endeavours.
