Situated in the coastal town of Rye, Victoria, Dragon Head Rock emerges as a compelling testament to the power of nature and time. This unique geological formation, sculpted by relentless waves and winds over eons, resembles a dragon's head rising from the sea. However, the rock's allure extends far beyond its physical attributes. It is steeped in Aboriginal lore and recognised as a place of spiritual significance. This amalgamation of natural beauty and cultural depth makes Dragon Head Rock a captivating subject for my MA project.
What I Observed: it was noted that during instances of low tide, the water recedes to disclose the full grandeur of the 'dragon', adding a contrasting element of fluidity against the static composition of the rock. Concurrently, the reef, normally hidden beneath the water's surface, becomes visible, and the water is gently cascading over it.
As the day transitioned into night, the setting sun gave way to a captivating twilight sky imbued with shades of blue. The allure of this moment led to the decision to attempt capturing an image under these conditions. However, determining the appropriate exposure time under such rapidly changing light conditions posed a significant challenge. The balance between capturing enough light for a clear image while avoiding overexposure from the lingering sunset required careful consideration and technical precision.
What I Think & Feel: While the decision to concentrate on Dragon Head Rock resulted from meticulous planning, it also allowed for a degree of spontaneity. Initial reservations regarding the inclusion of Dragon Head Rock led to an eleventh-hour decision that consequently revealed an unforeseen opportunity. This impromptu choice resonated with the inherent unpredictability characteristic of the natural world, fostering a more profound connection with the locale and enriching my personal experience as a photographer.
This unanticipated diversion soon evolved into a critical component of the project. It underscored the notion that some of the most significant discoveries are those we encounter serendipitously rather than those we meticulously plan for. The unexpected turn of events served as a poignant reminder of the value of spontaneity within the creative process. It highlighted that while careful planning is integral to the successful execution of a project, the allowance for spontaneous decisions can lead to rewarding and unexpected outcomes that add depth and richness to the final product.
Reflection: Embarking on this project, I faced uncertainty over the direction of the creative process. The challenge lay in finding a balance between structure and artistic expression. Instead, I opted to 'free fly,' capturing a sweeping motion that encapsulated the unrestrained power of nature and the liberating essence of the photographic moment.
